1.) Membership Information

How does a KYD Membership work?

Since 2017 KYD has been an online magazine. We now publish paywalled content online every week, which members have full access to. You’ll receive a newsletter from us each Monday morning with links to these articles, which you can access by logging into the website.

You’ll also receive:

•  Access to the complete KYD digital archive
•  A 10% discount on all online writing courses (plus further discounts throughout the year!)
•  Entry to members-only giveaways
•  The ability to pitch your writing to us
•  The ability to enter our writing awards. If you are a KYD School Member, your students will have free entry to the KYD School Writing Prize.
•  The option of receiving a discounted copy of our yearly short story anthology, New Australian Fiction, every year

Will my KYD membership auto-renew?

Yes, all KYD memberships are set to automatically renew. We’ll send you an automated reminder 7 days before renewal to give you the option of opting-out. If you’d like to switch to manual renewal simply email subscriptions@killyourdarlings.com.au and we will change this membership setting for you.

Can I order a gift subscription to KYD?

Yes, gift subscriptions can be ordered via our website. Simply click on the ‘This is a Gift’ option during the checkout process and follow the prompts. Please note that the gift recipient will be sent an automated email about their gift membership at the time of purchase.

2.) Membership Account Questions

I’m a member but I’m having trouble logging in or accessing content — help!

We suggest you follow the steps outlined below:

1. Request a new password be emailed to you
2. Log in and check your subscription status in the account area
3. If your membership has expired, you can purchase a new one in our online shop.

If the problem persists, please email subscriptions@killyourdarlings.com.au and we will investigate for you.

Please note that if it is a workshop you are trying to access, these are located on a separate platform called Teachable. For more information, please scroll down to Section 3 of our FAQs.

How do I access my membership discount code?

When you purchase a KYD membership, you will be automatically sent a confirmation email that includes your discount code. This code gives you a 10% discount in our shop, as well as any purchases of online writing courses via the Teachable platform. Please use this same code in the Teachable shopping cart.

KYD regularly sends around reminders of the discount code to our members. If you have forgotten your code, please email: subscriptions@killyourdarlings.com.au.

My card has expired. How do I change my payment details?

Log in to your online account. Click Subscriptions/Payment methods, then click Change Payment and enter your new card details.

If you have multiple subscriptions you’ll need to click on the subscription number to the left of the current active subscription before you’ll see the Change Payment option.

If your subscription is listed as ‘on hold’ and your card has expired you’ll need to cancel your on hold subscription and purchase a new one in our shop. If you have any questions please email subscriptions@killyourdarlings.com.au.

If your subscription is listed as ‘expired’ you can simply purchase a new membership in our online shop using your new card details.

Can I disable my auto-renewal for my KYD membership?

Yes, simply email subscriptions@killyourdarlings.com.au and we will change this membership setting for you.

How do I cancel my KYD membership?

Email subscriptions@killyourdarlings.com.au and we can do it for you, or log into your KYD account, click ‘Subscriptions/Payment Methods’ then ‘Cancel’. Your membership status will change to ‘pending cancellation’ until the end of your paid membership period, and you’ll retain access to all paywalled content until then.

How can I access the KYD archive?

All pieces ever published by KYD in print and online are hosted on the KYD website. You can search for content by topic or browse by category (society, culture, fiction, memoir) on our website. To access these pieces you need to be a current member. For all extract queries, please contact info@killyourdarlings.com.au.

Can I upgrade my KYD membership from a digital membership to the bundle membership? 

Of course! Email us at subscriptions@killyourdarlings.com.au and we’ll organise this for you.

3.) Online Writing Courses

How do KYD‘s Online Writing Courses work?

Our online courses are hosted on the Teachable platform and can be accessed here. These courses are created by bestselling, award-winning writers and are designed to be self-guided, i.e. they are not interactive courses with the tutors or other students. Courses can be completed online, in your own time, at your own pace. The curriculum is made up bitesize lessons, video insights from your tutor, and timed exercises for you to complete.

When does an online course start and finish?

It is a completely self-paced – you decide when you start and when you finish. We encourage you to approach the material in these courses not just as lessons to be finished once and for all, but also as a collection of resources to which you can return time and again.

How long do I have access to the course?

Forever! After enrolling, you have unlimited lifetime access to your course – across any and all devices you own.

Does the teacher provide feedback?

No. If you are interested in receiving feedback on your project, we encourage you to check out our Manuscript Assessment Service.

How do I access the courses?

All our online courses are hosted at workshops.killyourdarlings.com.au, via the Teachable platform. Please note that as the Teachable platform is a separate website to KYD you will need to create a new account, and will not be able to use your KYD login details. Your courses will not show up in your KYD account, so to access it you need to login with your Teachable account here or follow the link in your welcome email from Teachable.

I’m a KYD member. How do I receive my 10% discount?

Click on ‘Enrol in course for $149’. Enter the coupon code that was emailed to you when you became a KYD member at checkout, underneath the tutor’s photo. If you need a reminder of this code please email info@killyourdarlings.com.au and we’ll be happy to provide it.

Can I buy a gift voucher for KYD Online Writing Courses?

Yes! You can find gift vouchers in our online shop. Upon purchase an automatic email including a coupon code will be sent to your email address for you to pass on to the recipient. Then they can simply visit our Online Courses page, select a course, and apply the coupon code at the payment stage. If your coupon code email does not arrive please check your Spam folder.

4.) Writing Opportunities and Services

How can I pitch my writing to KYD?

KYD accepts unsolicited pitches from KYD Members at various times throughout the year. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers are invited to pitch without the need for a KYD Membership. We encourage writers from diverse backgrounds and at all levels of experience to pitch and submit to KYD. We pay all contributors. What is the KYD Mentors Program?

The KYD Mentors Program offers a unique, comprehensive and structured editorial mentorship program designed to support early-career writers in the development of a long-form work of fiction or non-fiction. You can find more information here.

How do KYD Manuscript Assessments work?

Assessments take the form of comprehensive editorial notes that examine the key components of your manuscript (such as structure, character and plot), as well as identifying areas for further improvement.

You can find more information on our manuscript assessments here. All members receive a 10% discount on any manuscript assessment. Please use the same code you received upon becoming a member in the checkout.

5.) Job Opportunities and Internships

Can I apply for an internship with KYD?

Does KYD offer work experience?

Unfortunately KYD does not have the office space to offer work experience to school students. If you’re interested in work experience in the publishing industry we suggest having a look at the members list of the Small Press Network to get an idea of other organisations you could approach.
